The Story

The light had that soft, golden hush that only shows up at the end of a long day—like the world itself was exhaling.

Serena adjusted the paper-wrapped bouquet in her hand, careful not to crush the delicate white petals of the daisies. They were her favorite: simple, bright, and a little stubbornly cheerful even when everything else felt complicated. Fiona trotted beside her, ears perked, nose busy cataloging every scent along the petal-strewn sidewalk.

“Don’t even think about it,” Serena murmured as Fiona slowed near a suspiciously interesting lamppost. Fiona glanced up, entirely unapologetic.

The street was quieter than usual. A few windows glowed warmly, but most people were still out finishing work, meeting friends, living their lives somewhere else. Serena had checked her phone earlier. No new messages. Gavin had warned her he’d be late tonight, something about a last-minute case that couldn’t wait.

Of course it couldn’t.

She wasn’t upset, exactly. Just… aware of the space where plans used to be.

A breeze lifted, sending a scatter of pink petals skimming across the pavement like confetti no one had bothered to clean up. Serena paused for a moment, watching them drift.

It had been one of those days. The kind that wasn’t bad enough to complain about, but just heavy enough to linger. Too many small frustrations. Too much noise. Not enough quiet.

Fiona gave a soft huff and leaned gently against her leg, as if to say, I’m still here.

Serena smiled, reaching down to scratch behind her ears. “Yeah. You’re right.”

Her gaze drifted down the block, toward the little corner pizza place with the neon sign that buzzed faintly even from here. She could already picture it: sitting on the couch, shoes kicked off, a movie she’d seen a dozen times playing in the background. No pressure. No expectations. Just… easy.

Maybe that’s what she needed.

“Pizza?” she asked.

Fiona’s ears popped up instantly.

Serena laughed, the sound surprising her a little. “Okay, okay. That’s a yes.”

She shifted the bouquet to her other hand, the daisies brushing lightly against her arm, and turned toward the glow of the shop. The evening stretched ahead, quiet, uncomplicated, and all hers.

Not every night needed to be full to feel complete.

Sometimes, a warm slice of pizza, a familiar movie, and a small white dog who never let you feel alone were more than enough.
