The Story
“Every new friend is a new adventure,” Serena read aloud from the little wooden sign hanging beside the flower stand. She smiled at it as she adjusted her glasses and looked around the crowded farmer’s market. Gavin had wandered off a few minutes earlier to investigate homemade jams and fresh peach pies, leaving Serena to browse on her own among the rows of produce and handmade soaps.
That was how she somehow ended up in the middle of the petting area.
“Well, hello there,” she laughed softly as an enormous brown-and-white cow ambled toward her with slow, curious steps. The cow’s dark eyes were gentle, almost sleepy, and Serena instinctively held her hands up like she was negotiating with royalty. Around her feet, fluffy little sheep bounced through the grass with far too much confidence for creatures their size.
One of them tugged lightly at the hem of her jeans.
“Excuse you!” Serena gasped dramatically, pointing at the sheep as though she’d just been personally betrayed. The sheep stared back without a hint of remorse.
That was the exact moment Gavin returned.
He stopped dead in the path, phone already halfway out of his pocket. “Don’t move.”
Serena turned toward him. “Gavin, this sheep is trying to eat me.”
“You look like you’ve been adopted by the entire farm,” he said through a laugh.
The cow stepped even closer beside her while Serena tried to pose with at least a little dignity. She put one hand on her hip and flashed a peace sign just as Gavin snapped the picture.
Unfortunately, at that exact second, a second sheep wandered directly into the frame behind her with the expression of someone desperately trying to become internet famous.
Gavin burst out laughing as he checked the photo. “A sheep photobombed you.”
Serena spun around. “Are you serious?”
The sheep blinked innocently.
“Oh, absolutely intentional,” Gavin said. “Look at him. He knew exactly what he was doing.”
“And somehow he picked my bad side.”
The cow let out a loud moo behind them, which only made Gavin laugh harder.
By then, even Serena couldn’t stop giggling. The entire scene had become ridiculous in the best possible way: sheep photobombers, judgmental cows, chickens wandering through the background like unpaid extras in a movie.
Gavin slipped his phone back into his pocket and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. “You know,” he said, “most people leave the farmer’s market with vegetables.”
“And I’m leaving with a fan club,” Serena replied.
As they headed toward the pie stand together, Serena glanced back one last time at the tiny sheep still standing proudly in the grass, as if it deserved photography credit.
Maybe the sign had been right after all.
Sometimes adventures didn’t begin with big plans or faraway places.
Sometimes they began with a photobombing sheep at a farmer’s market on a sunny afternoon.
