That quiet spring morning felt like one of those in-between moments, before the day fully begins, when everything is soft, warm, and just a little bit unhurried. Serena lingered on the patio with her coffee, perfectly content to let the world wake up around her.

The Story

The morning air was warm already, the kind of early spring warmth that felt like a reward after months of waiting. Serena stepped out onto the back patio with her coffee, easing into the stillness like she didn’t want to disturb it.

She shifted her weight, the oversized ducky slippers making a soft thump against the stone. Bright pink. Slightly ridiculous. Completely unavoidable.

Gavin’s fault.

She glanced down at them, a smile tugging at her lips. He had shown up with them one evening like it was the most normal thing in the world. “You need these,” he’d said, entirely serious. Something about comfort. Something about joy. She’d rolled her eyes.

And then she’d put them on.

Now here she was, standing on her patio at sunrise, drinking coffee in ducky feet like this was just… who she was as a person.

She took a sip, letting the warmth settle in, and looked out over the yard. The light was soft, almost pink, stretching across the patio and catching on the glass of the doors behind her. It wasn’t fully quiet—there was a low hum threading through the air.

Bees.

Her gaze drifted to the flower baskets, where tiny, determined bodies moved from bloom to bloom. She stepped a little closer, careful not to startle them. One hovered briefly near her shoulder, then drifted away, unimpressed.

“Fair,” she murmured.

From inside, she could hear faint movement—Gavin, probably, starting to wake up. She pictured him wandering into the kitchen, noticing her mug missing, glancing out the window to find her here.

And definitely noticing the slippers.

She huffed a quiet laugh into her coffee.

The patio table needed wiping down. The plants could use watering. There were a dozen small things waiting for her attention.

But not yet.

Serena leaned lightly against the porch column, watching the bees, feeling the warmth of the mug in her hands and the sun slowly rising at her back.

The day could wait a few more minutes.

And if Gavin came out and teased her about the slippers, well… that was a problem for later.
