I was genuinely surprised by their size; these beauties are impressively large, almost reminiscent of dire wolves. My own companion is named Nymeria, in honor of Arya Stark’s iconic companion from Game of Thrones.

The Story
The first snow of the season had settled gently over the valley, softening every edge and turning the world into a pale, shimmering dream. Dawn had barely broken when the arctic wolves emerged from the shelter of their pines, their white coats blending almost perfectly with the frost-dusted landscape.
They moved as one—silent, purposeful, and elegant. At the top of the hill, the lead wolf paused, nose lifted to the wind. The others stilled behind him, their breaths rising like tiny clouds in the blue-cold air. The scent of prey carried faintly from the meadows below, but nearer still was the crisp promise of water.
With a low chuff, the alpha signaled, and the pack flowed down the hillside like living snow.
The young wolves bounded ahead, leaping playfully through drifts, sending small flurries of powder into the air. Their paws slipped now and then on icy rocks, but they recovered with youthful enthusiasm. Two of them paused near a cluster of red winter blooms—striking splashes of color in a monochrome world—sniffing curiously before darting after their siblings.
At the foot of the slope, the frozen stream waited. Crystal-thin ice crackled beneath their pads as they approached. The boldest wolf, a lithe female with pale gray markings along her shoulders, stepped onto the slick edge of the bank. She lowered her head, nose touching the ice, seeking the places where meltwater pooled beneath the surface. The others spread out along the shoreline, lapping at open patches and watching for movement beneath the frozen glass.
This place was familiar, an ancient watering spot passed down through generations. Even now, despite the cold, the stream still fed the valley’s life, offering the wolves a drink and a moment of calm before the hunt.
Above them, the sentinel wolf remained at his high perch, surveying the world beyond the trees. His posture was rigid with purpose, ears tuned to distant rhythms only he seemed to hear. Soon, he would call the pack onward. They would chase the faint scent rising from the meadows, their morning hunt beginning beneath a sky bright with falling snow.
But for now, the valley was quiet. The wolves drank. The world glowed.
And winter held its breath around them.
