The Story

By midafternoon, Serena’s pool had become the sort of place where absolutely nothing productive was going to happen.

Which, as far as Serena was concerned, was exactly the point.

She stretched across her pink-and-white float, one leg dangling in the water and the other kicked dramatically into the air. “Water we doing?” she called.

Ella Rose groaned from her own float. “No.”

“Just floating!” Serena finished, dissolving into laughter before anyone else could react.

Luna, lounging nearby, slowly lowered her sunglasses. “You have made that stupid joke at least six times.”

“And it gets funnier every time.”

“It really doesn’t,” Ella Rose said.

Serena pointed at her. “You laughed the third time.”

“I had just finished a drink.”

“That still counts.”

The evidence of their increasingly lazy afternoon floated nearby: cans, bottles, and melting ice tucked into an inflatable cooler, plus a pink flamingo drink holder that kept drifting away as though it had decided it wanted nothing more to do with them.

They had started the afternoon innocently enough. Lunch. Sunscreen. Music. Pool.

Then Luna had mixed drinks. That was where the plan had gone slightly off course.

Serena sat up and squinted at Ella Rose. “You’re really pink.”

“I know.”

“No, I mean reeeally pink.”

“I know.”

Luna turned toward her and frowned. “Ella Rose, did you put sunscreen on again?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

Ella Rose considered the question. A little too long. “This morning?”

Luna stared at her.

Ella Rose sighed. “Fine. Apparently I have made some poor decisions today.”

“You look like a lobster,” Serena announced.

“Thank you, Serena.”

“A very pretty lobster.”

“That does not make it better.”

Luna reached toward the edge of the pool where they had abandoned their towels and sunscreen. “Everybody needs more sunscreen. Even me.”

Serena waved her away. “I’m fine.”

“You’re turning pink too.”

“I am not.”

“You are.”

Serena looked down at her shoulders. They were, in fact, suspiciously rosy.

She gasped. “The sun has betrayed me.”

“The sun is doing exactly what the sun does,” Ella Rose said.

Serena stared accusingly toward the sky. “After everything I’ve done for summer.”

Luna burst out laughing.

That was encouragement Serena absolutely did not need. She slid out of her float and into the water.

“What are you doing?” Luna asked.

Serena stood in the shallower end, grinning.

Ella Rose immediately recognized the expression.

“Oh, no.”

“Oh, yes.”

“Serena…”

Serena slapped both hands against the water. A wave hit Ella Rose squarely in the face.

There was one stunned second of silence. Then Ella Rose wiped the water from her sunglasses. “You have made a terrible mistake, Missy.”

Serena shrieked as Ella Rose launched herself out of her float. Within seconds, the supposedly relaxing afternoon became a full-scale pool war.

Luna tried to remain neutral. She lasted approximately twelve seconds. “Leave me out of this!” she yelled, laughing as she paddled backward.

Serena splashed her.

Luna froze. “Ooooh,” she said quietly. “So that’s how it is.”

Serena’s eyes widened. “Luna—”

Too late. Luna sent a sheet of water directly at her.

Serena squealed and ducked behind her float, using it as a shield.

“That’s cheating!”

“There are no rules!”

Ella Rose shoved Serena’s float aside.

“Traitor!”

“Lobsters have no loyalty.”

For the next several minutes, dignity disappeared entirely. Floats overturned. Sunglasses went flying. The flamingo drink holder was swept into the chaos and somehow survived. Serena attempted what she called a “precision splash maneuver,” missed both of her friends, and smacked herself in the face with water instead.

That ended the battle because Ella Rose and Luna were laughing too hard to continue.

Serena stood in the middle of the pool, dripping wet, trying to look offended. “I’m so glad my pain brings you joy.”

Ella Rose leaned against her float, wheezing. “You splashed yourself!”

“I was caught in the crossfire.”

“There was no crossfire.”

“There was emotionally.

Eventually they reclaimed their floats and drifted together in exhausted silence. The music played softly from the patio. Serena rested her head against the side of her float and smiled.

“This is nice.”

Luna glanced at her. “The part where nobody is attacking me?”

“That too.”

Ella Rose sighed contentedly. “We should do absolutely nothing more often.”

Serena lifted one finger. “Water we doing?”

Ella Rose immediately splashed her.

Serena screamed with laughter. “Worth it!”

Luna shook her head. “I cannot believe Gavin is marrying you.”

“He knows what he’s getting.”

“I’m not sure he does.”

Serena grinned. “Too late now.”

A few minutes later, Luna finally succeeded in her sunscreen campaign. Ella Rose was ordered beneath the patio umbrella with a cold towel over her shoulders, Serena reluctantly admitted that her own shoulders were beginning to sting, and all three agreed that perhaps the next round should consist of ice water instead of cocktails.

Serena sank into a chair beside Ella Rose, wrapped in a towel and still smiling.

“So,” Luna said, settling beside them, “what have we learned today?”

Ella Rose raised her hand. “Reapply sunscreen. Often.”

“Good.”

“Drink more water.”

“Excellent.”

They both looked at Serena.

Serena thought seriously for a moment.

Then she smiled.

“Never start a splash fight unless you’re prepared to finish it.”

Ella Rose groaned. Luna laughed.

And from somewhere in the pool, the abandoned flamingo slowly floated past… carrying the only drink that had somehow survived the entire afternoon.
