The Story
Long before kingdoms rose and fell, before roads crossed the mountains and villages dotted the valleys below, there had been a temple dedicated to Selenea, the Goddess of Love.
Time had claimed the temple centuries ago.
The marble roof had collapsed. Columns lay broken across the floor. Ivy climbed the ancient stonework, wrapping itself around arches and statues as though nature had decided to guard the sacred place. Most people had forgotten its name.
But Selenea had not.
Though she rarely revealed herself to mortals anymore, she often returned to the ruins. There was comfort in walking among the remnants of a place built by people who had once believed love was the strongest force in the world.
On this particular morning, she wandered beneath the crumbling arches dressed in flowing white silk, her bare feet silent against the sun-warmed stone.
Two rainbow-colored finches rested upon her hand.
The tiny birds had followed her for years.
Some believed they were ordinary creatures. Others whispered they were spirits sent to carry messages between hearts separated by distance, misunderstanding, or fear.
Selenea never corrected either story.
The finches shifted their wings as a gentle breeze stirred the ivy overhead.
Far below, in the mortal world, she could feel thousands of emotions flowing through the invisible threads that connected every living soul. Joy. Grief. Longing. Hope.
And fear.
Especially fear.
Not the fear of monsters or storms.
The fear of being truly known.
It was one of the oldest fears in existence.
Again and again, Selenea watched mortals hide pieces of themselves from one another. They concealed their dreams, disguised their feelings, and built careful masks they hoped would earn acceptance. They presented polished versions of themselves to the world while burying the parts they worried others might reject.
Yet love had never worked that way.
Love could not find a mask. Love could only find what was real.
One of the finches chirped softly. Selenea smiled.
The birds were among her favorite creations. Their feathers blazed with vivid greens, golds, oranges, and blues. They made no effort to blend into the forests they inhabited. They carried their colors proudly wherever they flew.
They were exactly what they had been created to be.
Nothing more.
Nothing less.
“Perhaps that’s why I love them so much,” Selenea said quietly.
The finches tilted their heads.
“Every creature knows its true nature except humans.”
Sunlight streamed through the ruined arches, illuminating the ivy and marble in shades of gold and green.
For a moment, Selenea remembered the temple as it had once been—filled with flowers, laughter, music, and prayers. People had traveled for weeks to seek her blessing, believing that love was a magical gift from a goddess.
They had been mistaken.
Love itself was the magic.
Not romantic love alone, but the courage to be seen as you truly are.
The courage to reveal your true colors.
The finches fluttered from her hand and circled through the open sanctuary, their brilliant feathers flashing against the pale stone.
Selenea watched them soar above the ruins.
The temple might have fallen. The statues might have crumbled. The centuries might have erased nearly every trace of her worship.
But the lesson she had always tried to teach remained: the truest love was never found by becoming what others wanted. It was found by becoming fully, unapologetically yourself.
And like the bright little birds dancing through the ancient arches, by letting the world see your true colors.
