The Story

Serena closed her eyes and let the music wash over her. The mellow rhythm filled the coffeehouse, pulsing gently through the speakers stacked near the wooden counter. Wrapped in the cozy warmth of her golden knit set, she swayed to the beat—slow, easy, lost in the glow of the evening. Her white headphones rested snugly over her ears, sealing her inside her own private concert while the world around her melted away.

Fairy lights twinkled above her like tiny stars, casting soft reflections on the framed vinyl hanging behind her. The scent of freshly brewed espresso mingled with the faint sweetness of pastries cooling on the counter. It was late, but the café still hummed with a quiet kind of magic, the kind that made time stretch and soften.

At a corner table, Gavin watched her, a faint smile tugging at his lips. His hands were wrapped around a steaming mug, untouched for the moment. He loved seeing her like this, unguarded, radiant, wholly lost in the rhythm only she could hear.

The song shifted to its final chorus, and Serena tipped her head back slightly, mouthing the words only she could hear through the headphones. As the last notes faded, she opened her eyes and caught Gavin watching her. She laughed softly, tugging one side of her headphones down to rest around her neck.

“I’ve got the music in me,” she said, her voice warm and playful.

Gavin lifted his mug in reply. “Yeah,” he said. “I can tell.”

And in that moment—between the soft lights, the lingering music, and the steady hum of the coffeehouse—they both knew the night was exactly as it should be.
