About the Images

Today’s look was chosen with movement, comfort, and practicality in mind, featuring pieces that feel just as right on a mountain trail as in a quiet moment of pause. This post features a few items from current grid events that came together naturally for Serena’s day outdoors with her pup, Fiona.

First up is Serena’s sweater, a new release from Sorumin for the brand-new event Ouh La La. The Off-Shoulder Top is a beautifully textured ribbed sweater that strikes a perfect balance between cozy and stylish, making it ideal for those surprisingly warm winter days when heavy layers feel like too much. It comes in six color packs with four shades each, ranging from soft pastels and versatile neutrals to bold, statement-making hues. Serena is wearing one of the brighter blue tones, which feels just right against the January sky. The first round of Ouh La La opened on 14 January and will run through 8 February 2026, so be sure to stop by and grab a demo.

No day hike, real or virtual, is complete without a good pair of sunglasses. Serena is wearing the newest offering from Deep Static. The Coco Glasses are available at the current round of Uber and are exactly what you would expect from the brand: stylish, well-crafted, and endlessly customizable. The included HUD allows you to adjust the frame color, lens tint, and even the metal trim, making it easy to tailor them to any look or lighting. A demo is available at Uber and is well worth trying.

And, of course, we cannot talk about this post without mentioning Fiona. As soon as I saw the new West Highland Terriers by Rezz Room, I knew I had to bring one home. Many of you may remember that my sweet soul-dog, my RL Fiona, unexpectedly crossed the Rainbow Bridge in late 2024. That loss hit me hard. RL Fiona was not a Westie, but aside from the coloring, she looks remarkably similar to the Rezz Room Westies. So much about the shape and expression felt familiar that I may or may not have teared up a little when I took SL Fiona out of the box.

SL Fiona’s harness is one of Rezz Room’s newest PetLife accessories, because even adventurous virtual pups deserve good gear. You can find the West Highland Terriers and their PetLife accessories at the current round of FaMESHed.

The Story

Serena had started early, the kind of early that still tasted like night. Even in January, the trailhead was quiet, the mountains rising ahead of her in dark, patient silhouettes. The air was cool but surprisingly gentle for the season—one of those rare, unseasonably warm winter days that felt like a secret gift. Fiona bounced at the end of her leash, white fur already catching what little light there was, tail wagging with the unshakable confidence of someone who believed every path led somewhere wonderful.

The climb was steady and demanding. Rocks jutted out like old bones, and the trail narrowed into switchbacks that tested Serena’s legs and focus. She moved carefully, breathing in air that smelled of pine and thawing earth rather than snow. It felt strange to hike without the bite of winter in her lungs, but she welcomed it. Fiona ranged just ahead, pausing often to look back as if to say, You coming? This way smells important.

As the sun climbed higher, the sky softened into shades of pink and gold, streaked with thin, feathery clouds that looked as though someone had brushed them on by hand. By the time Serena reached the peak, her muscles ached pleasantly, the good kind of tired that felt earned. She stepped onto the flat stone at the top and stopped.

The view took her breath away more completely than the climb ever had.

Mountains rolled outward in every direction, ridgelines fading from deep charcoal to misty blue as distance swallowed detail. Valleys cradled ribbons of forest and shadow, and far below, sunlight flashed on something—perhaps a stream, perhaps a distant road—like a secret being briefly revealed. A warm breeze swept across the summit, unusual for January, tugging at her hair and snapping playfully at the fringe of her scarf.

Her scarf.

Serena reached up, fingers brushing the soft fabric at her neck. She almost hadn’t worn it, given the warmth of the day, but habit—and sentiment—had won out. It had been a gift from her grandmother, given on a crisp autumn morning years ago, folded neatly with the kind of care that turned ordinary things into keepsakes. For when you’re out exploring, her grandmother had said, smiling. You always did like to climb higher than everyone else.

Fiona trotted to the edge of the peak and stood proudly, chest out, nose lifted, as though she had personally conquered the mountain. Serena laughed and joined her, one hand resting lightly on the dog’s harness. For a long moment, they stood together, two small figures against something vast and ancient, winter temporarily forgotten.

That was when the wind changed.

It came in a sudden, playful gust—stronger than the others—reminding her that even on a warm January day, the mountains followed their own rules. The scarf lifted, tugged sharply at her neck. Serena reached instinctively and missed. It slipped free, twisting once in the air like a startled bird before sailing off the edge of the rock.

“Nooo!” She rushed forward, heart leaping, but it was already gone, carried downward by invisible currents.

She stood there, hands empty, watching until it disappeared from sight.

The loss hit harder than she expected. It wasn’t just a scarf. It was memory made tangible: the warmth of her grandmother’s hands, the sound of her voice, the quiet encouragement to keep going, keep climbing. Serena backed away from the edge and sank down onto a sun-warmed rock, grateful at least for the gentle weather as the wind brushed against her bare neck.

Fiona padded over immediately, pressing her shoulder into Serena’s knee, offering silent reassurance. Serena rested her chin in her hand and stared out at the horizon, thoughts drifting as easily as the clouds above. She thought about why she hiked at all—why she kept choosing steep paths and uncertain footing. Up here, away from noise and schedules, things simplified. Each step had a purpose. Each breath was intentional. Even loss, she realized, had its place.

After a while, Serena stood, brushed dust from her jeans, and clipped Fiona’s leash back into place. “Let’s head down now,” she said softly.

The descent was slower, more cautious. Without snow or ice, the trail was forgiving, though still steep. Fiona sniffed enthusiastically at every bend, nose working overtime as if tracking a hundred stories written into the ground. About halfway down, near a bend where the trail widened briefly, Fiona stopped short.

She sniffed again. Then she barked, sharp and excited.

Serena followed her gaze.

There, snagged neatly on a low, twisted branch of mountain laurel, was her scarf.

It fluttered gently in the mild winter breeze, caught but unharmed, as though the mountain had decided to give it back after all. Serena let out a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding and laughed, eyes stinging just a little. She freed the fabric and wrapped it once more around her neck, warmth settling in where it belonged.

“Well,” she said, crouching to hug Fiona, “I guess it wasn’t finished hiking with us.”

Fiona wagged her tail, clearly satisfied.

Together, they continued down the trail, the mountain behind them, January feeling momentarily like spring, and the scarf warm against Serena’s skin… proof that some gifts, no matter how far they wander, always find their way home.
