The Story
The moment Serena drifted into sleep, the world around her blurred like watercolor. When her eyes opened again, she stood in the heart of ancient Greece — not as herself, but as someone older, wiser, and infinitely more burdened.
She was dressed in a flowing gown the color of a quiet sea, the fabric rippling in the warm breeze like a whispered secret. Golden chains wound delicately around her waist and shoulders, catching the light of the morning sun that filtered through distant marble columns. Her hair fell in loose waves, kissed by salt and wind, and around her stretched a city sculpted from myth, its temples looming, half in shadow, half in glory.
She did not know how she had come to be here. Yet deep within, Serena felt the stirring of an ancient name: Medea.
In the dream, memory and magic folded together. Her heart ached not with confusion, but recognition. She walked slowly through the temple courtyard, her bare feet brushing against smooth stone worn down by centuries of prayer and betrayal. The hem of her gown whispered along the ground, and every thread shimmered like a sliver of fate.
Below her, near the base of the Acropolis, she saw him — Jason — a flicker of laughter and sunlight, too far to reach, too familiar to forget. He stood with another woman, his hand resting easily on her shoulder. The smile he wore was one she had once believed belonged to her alone.
Serena’s breath caught in her throat. Was it her own pain, or Medea’s?
She turned away from the vision, her steps unsteady. The temples around her seemed to breathe with her sorrow. A flock of birds circled in the distance, silhouetted against the pink and gold sky. Somewhere, an unseen chorus whispered her name.
She walked through the misty colonnade and found herself before a reflecting pool. The water stilled as she approached, revealing not Medea’s face, but her own. Yet her expression was not the soft one she knew from waking life. There was strength there now. Resolve. Grief without tears.
“I am not her,” she whispered, though her voice sounded ancient. “I am Serena.”
And yet, the silence answered otherwise. In this dream, she was both.
The wind picked up. The golden tattoo on her wrist shimmered with strange energy, its pattern almost serpentine, as though alive. The choice was hers. To become vengeance, or to become free.
A tear slipped down her cheek, not for a man lost, but for the part of herself she had almost given away. She placed a hand over her heart — the same gesture captured in the stillness of the dream — and felt it beating, strong and steady.
Then, like a curtain falling, the temples faded, the light dissolved, and the scent of the sea was replaced by the clean cotton of her bedsheets.
Serena awoke just before dawn, her room still and dim. The dream clung to her like the folds of the gown she had worn. Fiona stirred at her feet but did not wake. She lay there for a long time, the image of herself in ancient Greece vivid in her mind: draped in blue, standing tall before the ruins of trust and triumph alike.
And though she could no longer hear the voice of Medea, she carried with her the echo of a woman who had once been broken — and chosen, instead, to rise.
